Pre-freezing and Pre-melting

چکیده
When attempts are made to interpret the solid-liquid transition in terms of molecular structure, highly significant information can emerge from phemomena of pre-melting and pre-freezing. Empirically, on approaching the transition between solid and liquid, characteristic parameters of the phase under examination may show an accelerated rate of change, in the sense of a premonition of the change due to take place at the transition point itself. It is convenient to consider separately thermodynamic parameters such as the heat content, the volume, and derived quantities, and rate process parameters which have included critical shear strength and diffusion for the solid, and viscosity and other transport parameters for the melt. In certain cases many other methods have become available in recent years, especially in studying pre-melting. Depending on the nature of the crystal, thermodynamic phenomena of pre-melting may be very prominent, or almost imperceptible. Prominent examples with various crystal structures include heat content and volume changes in polymethylene compounds!' 2, heat content change of lithium fluoride" and alkali metals", and thermal expansions of silver halides", When only thermodynamic measurements are available, rigorous care is always necessary to eliminate a quite trivial effect known as " heterophase pre-melting". This arises from a small mole fraction nlN of impurity when this is not soluble in the crystals but is soluble in the melt. Theory shows that the excess ~Q of volume or heat content change, which arises from actual formation of small amounts of liquid at a temperature T below the limiting melting point T ro, in such cases is related to the total change ~Qo by the equation

Poly(vinyl methyl ether) hydrogels at temperatures below the freezing point of water—molecular interactions and states of water
Water interacting with a polymer reveals a number of properties very different to bulk water. These interactions lead to the redistribution of hydrogen bonds in water. It results in modification of thermodynamic properties of water and the molecular dynamics of water. That kind of water is particularly well observable at temperatures below the freezing point of water, when the bulk water crysta...

متن کاملSize-Dependent Melting Behavior of Colloidal In, Sn, and Bi Nanocrystals
Colloidal nanocrystals are a technologically important class of nanostructures whose phase change properties have been largely unexplored. Here we report on the melting behavior of In, Sn, and Bi nanocrystals dispersed in a polymer matrix. This polymer matrix prevents the nanocrystals from coalescing with one another and enables previously unaccessed observations on the melting behavior of coll...

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different levels of glycerol on Dallagh rams semen characteristics in pre and post freezing conditions. Semen samples were collected from 4 healthy and mature rams using an electro ejaculator, were mixed with Tris extender in a ratio of 1:4 semen and assessed at 5°c. 0.5 ml of straws were filled with diluted semen and kept above liqui...
متن کاملEffects of new synthetic cryoprotectant agents on histological characteristics of various classes of vitrified bovine pre-antral follicles
Previous studies have reported many discrepancies about the best type and concentration of cryoprotective agents (CPAs) and biological variability among various pre-antral follicle classes after cryopreservation of ovarian tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of some synthetic polymers on histological characteristics of different types of pre-antral follicles after bovin...
